Setting up your own e-commerce website may be essential if you want your home-based business to flourish. If you're starting your business and your e-commerce site small then setting up the website is not as difficult as most people think.

You can start by creating a simple website hosted by free web hosts. The functionalities of your website will be very limited but if you have no budget to run and maintain your own full-blown e-commerce website then this is a good way to start. It will give you the opportunity to make your products accessible to hundreds if not millions of potential customers worldwide. With this set-up, all you need is a computer, an Internet connection, and a web host.

To set-up a full-blown interactive, online store or an e-commerce website then you will need more than those abovementioned requirements. First, you will be required to register a domain name. In choosing a domain name, make sure you pick a name that is related to your products or the brand you are trying to build. Keep your domain name simple and easy to remember.

Next, you will need to sign up for the services of a web host. Packages and rates differ from web host to web host so if you do not completely understand the workings of the Internet or the technical requirements of your website, make sure you get someone who understands these things to evaluate the proposals sent to you by web hosts. There will be many technical issues with regards to running an e-commerce website and make sure you discuss all of them with your prospective host. One of the most important issues will be web security and privacy. You will also need to have a legal consultant check the contract and make sure all pertinent details are indicated in the agreement, including: disk and bandwidth allocations, technical support, maintenance and others. Also, if you will be running an online store, make sure your web host can provide functionalities such as computing for VAT, displaying options per product, and even linking your store to your inventory.

Running an online store will also require you to have some sort of payment gateway for your customers. Third party organizations such as paypal can provide you secure payment gateways. Since your clients will divulge sensitive financial information such as credit card or debit card numbers, you must guarantee them a safe transaction each and every time they make a purchase from your online store.

Finally, people must be aware of your e-commerce site for them to patronize it. You will need to actively promote or advertise your website. There are numerous ways in promoting your website. Just because you have an online business doesn't mean you can't use the techniques employed by traditional businesses. You can directly advertise through various media such as print, TV or the internet. You can also have special promos. You can also try to increase your link popularity. This will require a lot of time and effort but remember that in the end you will benefit from your site's success.
