Basic Factors That Affect SEO

There are plenty of things that your search engine rank is dependent on. These things fall under two distinct categories. These are the off-page factors and the on-page ones.

Google is the best search engine that there is today and there is about 60% of the entire market share for this industry. If you want to succeed in SEO, the best thing you can do is to optimize the website for Google because this will also benefit you in terms of the other search engines like MSN and Yahoo.

Google is known to give more emphasis to the off-page factors in the algorithm that it uses to rank sites. On-page factors still have a bearing but it is certainly less.

There are not that many things that you can do with the off-page factors but the main thing that you should work on is the links.

If you are improving the links going to your website, you can do this from various sources like directory submissions, article marketing, commenting on blogs, creating forum signatures, and other things. These will all help to improve the rank of your website. You need to remember that links are only part of the whole equation. You also have to consider the keyword anchor texts.

These keyword texts are obviously important because how you can improve your page's rank for a certain word if it cannot be found anywhere on the page itself?

You will do well by coming up with many versions of one keyword that you wish to rank highly in. This is what Google prefers because it helps the sites look more natural.

For example, a website that sells ebooks about Internet marketing can use varying anchor texts like 'DVDS for Internet marketing' and 'beginners' Internet marketing DVDs'. Think of what adjectives your target market will use to search for your products or services.

The on-page factors are just as important for your search engine optimization efforts. With these factors, you just have to remember to check your meta tags and your meta descriptions. Also, you will benefit from keeping your content fresh and updated. A great way to do this is by operating a blog that you can post updates in. Make sure that your posts are relevant to your target market. To improve your rankings, you should concentrate on off-page SEO since this is 80% of the total algorithm that Google uses.
