Web Hosting Service - An Introduction

A website cannot go live without a web host. To give you an overview, web hosting is a service right on the Internet that will make companies, organizations as well as individuals to have their very own website to be accessed by the public through WWW (or the World Wide Web).
A web hosting company can either lease or own a server. If a client wants to engage into a web hosting service what happens is that there will be a space on the server intended for that client.
Web hosting services do vary; it depends on what the clients want and what features the company does offer. Say for instance, when it comes to uploading files to a website, there is a need to access the FTP. To gain access, username and password are required.
There are 3 common types of web hosting service:
- Free - the services are limited up to certain features and most often there will be advertisements involved. This is how a free web hosting company earns profits.
- Shared - this means that a website is sharing with other websites the same server. It might be in hundreds or even thousands.
- Reseller - this will make clients be a web host themselves. Clients can have a dedicated server (virtually) since the server belongs to the main web hosting company or have a collocated server. Resellers most likely do have the same type of services and technical support which their provider does offer.
If you want to experiment making your very own website, or you want to know how your website will look like, then having a free web host will be applicable.
However, if you want your website to go live and be accessible to the public, it would be best to have a shared web hosting service. This will make your website look professional especially when it comes to a domain name. If it's a free web hosting service, it will be www.your domain name.domain name of the free web hosting company.com.
