If you are a webmaster with a good website and you are still not making money from it: then maybe it is time to make up your mind, join the affiliate marketing bandwagon and discover your website's true revenue potential!

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a method of promoting web businesses and is one of the best marketing tools on the web. It is constituted of an affiliate (the website who refers the product in an effort to earn a revenue), and a merchant (the website who owns and sells the product and willing to share revenues to its affiliates depending on their performance).

If you provide means to promote a product from a merchant website in your own website such as putting text links or banners that lead to their site, then you can be called an affiliate. Affiliate websites usually provide information, entertainment or content services that are closely related to their merchant's products, goods or services sold online. They gain incentives by the merchant's affiliate programs.

Assessing Your Website's Qualification to Affiliate Marketing

Before making an attempt to apply in an affiliate marketing program, as a webmaster you are responsible to assess your own website if it is affiliate market-ready. The merchant will most likely evaluate your website upon application and it may be subject for approval or rejection. Here are the important things you must check.

First, evaluate what your website is all about - it could be a search engine, a niche website, a loyalty website, blogs and RSS feeds, e-mail list affiliates, a personal website, among others. This is important for you to identify what type of affiliate your website is and will soon be beneficial in choosing the right merchant.

Your website must be well-structured and content-rich. Its major features must be already be up and running. It should provide relevant, up-to-date information to the person who needs it. Check if its navigation is working and fix dead links if there is any. The most important goal you must have in mind as a webmaster is to find ways to gain as much traffic as your site can. This can be achieved by increasing the appeal of your website such as improving its content services and graphic interface, taking advantage of rich multimedia technologies such as Flash, making online communities or forums, link exchange with other websites and involving in other types of website promotions.

The next thing to do is to check if your website has allotted space for ad links from prospective merchants - it could be placed horizontal or vertical. This could be a problem though, because some merchant's banner or text links are cluttered or take up space much more than you allocated and it could even affect your site's audience appeal.

Though this is not required by some merchants, it is best to have a good base traffic amount prior to your application since revenue from affiliate marketing depends largely on the number of referrals. This is tantamount to saying you can have lesser revenues with less visitors or traffic, and vice versa. Your website becomes market-ready when it has at least 1000 hits per day.

If you believe you have attained the prerequisites, then it is time for you to choose a merchant and pick the right affiliate program to realize your website's true revenue potential.
