Search engines are almost the only means Internet users use in obtaining information in the Internet.

This is why web designers go to such lengths to make their websites compatible to the standards of search engines as doing so is more or less the only way they can get search engine traffic in their sites.

So how do web designers make their websites appear on the numerous search engines?

Well, here is where search engine optimization, more commonly known as SEO comes in.

Search engine optimization is the method used by web designers to increase user-generated traffic in their web site by placing the web site high in the search engine listing because the higher it is up in the said listing means more Internet users will flock to their website generating what we call "search engine traffic" which is very good for any website.

So in short, search engine optimization is the process of developing a site to suit the criteria of a search engine to attract more users. But how do webmasters use SEO to optimize their web sites?

For us to answer that question we first need to know how a search engine works.

Basically, search engines are systems that retrieve information from the Internet. There are many types of search engines but most search engines are "crawler-based" search engines.

Crawler-based engines such as Google and Yahoo! generate search listings automatically through the use of programs called 'spiders' which are also sometimes called 'crawlers', hence the name. These crawlers prowl the Internet to collect data from web pages and store them in indexes where they will be retrieved if ever a user searches for them.

Now that we know the basic idea behind search engines, we can now discuss how one can use search engine optimization to make one's website at the forefront of search engine lists.

Since search engine optimization is all about bringing traffic into your website, the first step in any SEO endeavor is picking the right keywords.

Choosing what words to place in your site is important as those words are instrumental in bringing users to your websites as the crawlers that scanned your website most likely based the relevance of your website to a certain topic by scrutinizing the keyword that you have put in your website.

Putting relevant content in your website is also a good practice for SEO as engines base the website's rank more or less on the content perused upon by their crawlers.

Aside from these other SEO methods, one must also study the other several aspects of SEO through web articles and books that expound more on the subject of search engine optimization.

Search engines have become very influential in terms of how people use the Internet. This is why knowing and understanding the concept of search engine optimization or SEO is a must if one's website is to surface in the search listings and survive in cyberspace.
