Professional Business Web Design for Your Web Site

If you're running a personal web site, you can design it any way you like. But entrepreneurs don't have this freedom. Businessmen build their sites to SELL. That's what good business web design is for.

There are two ways to create good business web design for your site:

1) Do it yourself. Pros: You get full control. And seemingly cheap. Cons: It's time-consuming and strains your eyes.

2) Hire a professional web designer. Pros: Saves time and ensures quality.

We suggest that unless you have a lot of time in your hands, you should hire a web designer. Your valuable time can be used in other ways to further your business interests.

If you do want to do it yourself, keep a few things in mind:

- You have to purchase a graphics program like (gasp!) Photoshop and (gasp!) Dreamweaver, which would cost you a LOT more than hiring someone.

- Learn by example. Go to ecommerce sites and see what you like and dislike about them. Take notes and pretty soon you'll have a list of what makes a good business web design.

- Create a good company logo. Colors and shapes are intuitive. Create a simple, high-contrast and attractive logo and put it on all your pages.

- Don't go overboard with Google AdSense. A page full of Google AdSense ads just don't smack of "business web design." Why? Because people think you're doing what everyone else is?making money through AdSense. Without AdSense, your site would look immaculate.

- Make your web site friendly to disabled persons. There are resources for the blind and others that help you with this.

Now what if you do choose to hire a professional? How do you do it?

You can do three things:

- Ask your friends and colleagues.

- Look up freelance web designers online. Be sure to compare their prices. Competition is tight since business web designers area dime in a dozen.

- Post an ad yourself in Craigslist or some other classified ads site. Describe your web site, how much work you want done (SEO? Web design? Content writing? Graphics?), and the salary you offer.

Now when someone responds, ask for their portfolio first. Chat or talk with them before deciding. When you do close a deal with a designer, work closely with them during the process. Ask your family and friends to test it.

If you get the right business web designer to do it for you, pretty soon you should have a professional-looking web site. Doing it on your own takes more time, of course. But if you have time in your hands and you're willing to learn, it can be quite rewarding.
