Integrating SEO in Web Design

Design is more than a pattern, an ornament or a decoration. It is the very structure itself and the plan behind that structure. We may not be aware of it, but design is involve in many of our everyday activities. From organizing our closet to setting the table for dinner, we actually design because we plan the things that we do in these activities. No less is involved in web design, and the only difference is that the web designer performs on a more exacting and complicated level an act in which the rest of us engage everyday.

Web design entails creative action that fulfills a purpose-that of capturing the attention and eliciting the appreciation of the customer. Towards this end, the artist engaged in web design tries to achieve a balance of beauty and order in his work. He strives to organize the chaos of headlines, pictures, copy blocks and white space on each web page so that the customer will find his website easier to read and understand. But order must not be emphasized at the expense of beauty. The web designer must also put equal consideration on how he puts together the different ingredients of design, such as appropriate colors and color combination, application of shapes and sizes, lines and texture so that the overall effect will be pleasing to the eyes of the beholder.

By itself, a good web design will not serve its purpose if it cannot be found and read by the customer. Unless the web designer is also an SEO specialist, his website will literally be lost among the millions of others aimlessly floating in cyberspace. The real challenge in developing websites that sell is seamlessly integrating web design with SEO.

The job of the SEO specialist is no less demanding than the work of the artist engaged in web design. Effective SEO goes far beyond the prescriptions for good writing. It entails the skill to recognize keywords that customers will most likely use in searching for relevant websites. It involves the ability to use these keywords in writing the content in such a way that these will reinforce the advertising or marketing message without sounding stiff, forced or clumsy.

To take much of the guesswork out of the cumbersome task of generating appropriate keywords, SEO calls for the capability to put oneself into the shoes of the customers and competition alike to determine how they would think, feel and act. Just like in web design, the job of the SEO specialist involves a lot of organizing, planning and attention to visual aesthetics and the use of words. Developing websites that sell in today's highly competitive world needs expertise in both disciplines, which are the foundation of effective Internet marketing.
