Favicon.ico is a small icon found in the URL address bar of Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc. You can make it using any free icon generator or free online favicon generator. Usually favicon.ico must be 16x16 in dimension and must be saved as an .ico file. And also it should be uploaded into the root directory on the server hosting your web page. Below are steps to add favicon icon:
1. Create an image with 16x16 pixels
2. Save it as GIF or BMP file format with 256 colors or less
3. Convert it to the icon format and save as favicon.ico.
4. Upload it to the site
5. Add a link reference to the header of HTML document that you want the favorite icon associated with. e.g.<link rel="shortcut icon" href=" /favicon.ico type="image/x-icon" />

A Favicon is the little image (usually a.png file) located at the beginning of the url in the address bar. Many sites have a custom Favicon, making it easier to identify urls when saved in your browser Links, Bookmarks, or Favorites toolbar/folder.

The so-called favicon, i.e., the abbreviation of Favorites Icon, just as its name implies, it is its can let the browser Favorites in addition to display the corresponding title outside, still try to mark way different site. Of course, this is not only a Favicon all, according to the different browser, Favicon display also different: in most mainstream browsers as FireFox and Internet Explorer (5.5 and above version), not only in favorites Favicon display, but also at the same time appear in the address bar, then the user can drag Favicon to desktop to establish to website shortcut; In addition, tag type browser and even many extended functions, such as FireFox even support animation format favicon, etc
