website "wow" definitely a strong factor.But examples of site you taken are social sites and people love to visit them and that's why they are linked by most web properties.I don't think a business website is able to do such image so that people love to back-link to it yes that's a Good point to have a website with "wow" ,It increase your possibility to linked by few interesting audience.

Blogging
Social Media Bookmarking
Article and Directory submission etc etc

will help to promote backlinks, but content is KING!! Good, well written contect on your webpages and not taken from another website otherwise it will be seen as duplicate content. If you are not good at writing good content then find someone who can!!

You have to get dofollow and nofollow link (always seems more natural)

-Google is always right
- Look at your competitor's links
- Compare backlinks of your competitors
- get links from sites your competitors link to....etc
