Default Database backup

Your web host definitely backs up your database regularly but it is a must that you have to undertake your own back up task regularly. How do you automate your database back up?

Don't be so sure that your web host is backing up your database regularly. I've read tons of horror stories about web hosts going down and mysteriously losing entire databases that were supposedly being backed up. My hard work is way to important to me to trust any web host or automated service, so I back up my database daily on my own as I update daily on my sites.

I backup my database on a daily basis, in fact I use a cron job that runs on regular intervals to make a dump of the MySQL db in a folder.

cron jobs are the way to go. If you using wordpress etc to host your site, there are plugins like wp_backup which will do it on a scheduled basis. It can even mail it to you. I do a regular backup to my gmail account every DAY.

I tend to do mine every weekend, but I admit I do forget sometimes. I should really get into the habit of doing it more often though.

If your web host is Linux based, you check with your webhost if you can do it using CRON. That saves you a lot of your time doing the task manually.

Backups aren't that important for me so I'll usually only do them every month or so. Manually it doesn't take too long - around 5 mins to download everything and store it.

I think that backups are crucial for sites that run on some kind fo database. For html sites, I don;t worry so much as I have the files on a local hard drive.

But when DBs are being constantly updated, the backups need to be done often. I have made the mistake of losing good content by not being proactive.

I have undergone two disaster for not taking database backup. Previously I am using freehost, it closes without warning. Also some months ago my another site get hacked. Hacker clean all news, articles.
So, I am now taking backup after three days regularly, to avoid such problem.

I take backups of my MySQL database quite frequently.
I started doing this after i had to change a server and i didn't have a database backup.

What I have been doing is I populate first my local site then port my database to my live site. Whatever happens to my live site, I am confident I have a ready back copy with me. By the way this is applicable to sites which do not require inputs from online users.
