Default Your own hosting server?

Hi, does anyone here host their own sites? If so, can you answer some questions:
what's the startup cost(software, whatever else you need)?
Is there a monthly fee?
How much programming knowledge do you need?
Thanx

AffiliateSeeking will become famous soon enough
How do you know your server is faster than Google's. When it comes to having fast servers, I think Google has alot of experience in this department. Their search engine is fast, infact it is the fastest search engine I have seen when it comes to searching through billions of results and then returning them to the user.

Buvo are you thinking of installing a server at home or planning to rent/collocate a dedicated server from datacenter/web host? You don’t need to know any programming languages, however you do need to know about administrating a server, whether Linux or Windows.

I used to have just a big reseller account and cpanel. It was okay but I found it to be a nuisance because I was always doing something - setting up domain names, sub domains, pkg sizes, etc. PLus I had to hold two different accounts - one for adult and one for mainstream. And I always ran out of space and had to buy bigger packages.

Then I bought my own server and sent it to a data center. The server is bare bones really and they do all the work for me. In my case it is much easier. I send in my requests and they complete them within the hour.

If you have a collocation center near you than having your own server is pretty cheap. Ive been looking into dedicated servers and decided they are way to expensive for the hardware you get. So Im saving up to build my own box for about 1000usd and will than host it at a collocation center downtown for 50/month for 1tb of bandwidth.
