The Domain Name That Comes With Web Hosts

Hi,

I have been reading up on some web hosts and most of them offer at least one free domain name, yet 2createawebsite tells you to register a domain name and then choose a web host.

Is there something dodgey with the domain names that are given free or am I mistaken?
