To start you have to realize an affiliate manager costs 3-5k per month. To me, after interviewing a couple of them I felt that money would be better used elsewhere. I think through forum participation I can learn quite a bit about what affiliates want from their merchants.

If you have the time, do it yourself. The learning curve is steep, but there are very good resources out there to help. If you either are intimidated by the lack of knowledge of time, find a good manager. Try to cut a deal with them on a percentage of profit. You may get them to knock down their fee, for a piece of the action if it looks feasible to them.

Affiliate marketing is an easy and very popular way to get started on the internet mainly because you do not need to create a product of your own and you are provided with an affiliate website. However, is this enough or should you have your own website and start an online affiliate home business of your own? When one is provided with a product as well as the promotional tools it is no wonder that affiliate marketing has become such a popular way to get started on the internet.
Once you sign up as an affiliate you are usually given an affiliate website but one has to question whether this is sufficient to start and build a successful affiliate marketing business on the internet. You are more likely to achieve success in affiliate marketing on the internet by starting your own website due to the fact that you cannot make any changes to an affiliate website in order to optimize it for the search engines to gain organic traffic.

Thanks

Hi
If you want to have hundreds or thousands of affiliates promoting your products for you, you have many options. You can hire affiliate networks such as Commission Junction (now owned by ValueClick), LinkShare or Performics. They handle the tracking and money - and charge you a healthy percentage. Those companies charge a few thousand dollars to get your affiliate program established.

As said by "sun_shines", you have to spend a good amount of money if you want others to start promoting your affiliate program. So if you are ready to pay that much of amount you can get the result in return.

I would imagine that trial and error would cost less than 3-5k per month, for starting out an affiliate site. Maybe once you get it up and running, you can hire a consultant.

I would not suggest you to take a consultant, because you can find a huge amount of valuable information just for free. And still you will learn how everything works when you really start doing that!

You can do every thing yourself. like you can use forums to have conversation with affiliates, moreover you can search blog related to your particular niche. there are so many email marketing software available in the market. you can send bulk mail to the affiliates. so see everything can be done yourself.
For detailed study about the AM you can join forums like affiliateseeking and also available e-book are a great help.
