Previously, it was seen that, backlinks have the great position to increase page rank of any website. But as google updates these days, this myth became clear. Google doesn't depends on the backlink to distribute page rank. It only gives importance to the content of the page.

In my opinion Site content is important, I am not saying that backlinking is less important. But if you have good content, it will encourage organic backlinking.

On the other hand poor quality content will neither get you backlinks nor traffic (If you somehow manage to get the traffic, that won't be long lasting)

While content is always key, I try to give both the same respect and activity. I always bring new content to my site, and on the other hand I am looking for ways to get more links.

On content, just make sure it is unique content. Blog, post or add something worthy enough to read, if you have an interactive site where others can reply, ensure that the content is an attention grabber. Post about something that people can easily or that they want to respond to. Experiment with ideas and let them ride their course, nothing can really happen overnight anymore... not in this competitive website age.
