Automated blogging means spamming and duplicate blog that is useless for the SEO that requires the fresh and new content of the blog that attracts more to users also that is reason for the site bane having the bad content in the site and duplicate content and old one.

Since as of now Google has no defined policy against such duplicate content, then i do not think it is spam. It is just that one has to be ingenious about doing the SEO work for such sites to get them to rank.

One can for example try and identify the keywords that the original content is not ranking for and begin to target to rank for this.
