What areas do you think are currently the most important in organically ranking a site?

Both On Page and Off page areas are very important for improving ranking in search engines. On page include Meta Information, Content Optimization, link optimization, image optimization etc.

In off page go article submission, bookmarking, directory submission etc.

Organically ranking site, should mean that their quality deserves a place where there is ...
We should not forget that on-page optimization set in the first plan set brevity well-organized content ...
When such content assist the relevant anchor text back-links, that organically ranking...

On page and off page both are beneficial in seo.You should have a very good contents with relevant keywords, plus do link building in all possible way like directories, blog and forums submissions.
