Left sidebar link structure is a problem!

I am not an SEO expert. Hence, I have decided to share the issue here. I am sure that it will get solved. For my site, I have selected many keywords. I have also developed various categories for keyword. I thought of adding all the categories on the left sidebar. I thought of linking one category to second category, second to third, and so on. Do you think this link structure is effective enough? I am thinking of optimizing the home page first for the main keyword. What do you have to say about this practice? Please reply! I am waiting!
