Default connection btw google and dmoz

What's the connection between Google and DMOZ - does google own dmoz now?

I was searching around and found this page

http://directory.google.com/

To be listed in this directory, apparently, you have to be listed in dmoz first. I don't understand why? Plus what is this google directory for? Who uses it?
Is there any benefit to having a site included?

It is not easy to get listed in DMOZ based on my own experience. I'm not really aware of its set of criteria so that your sites get listed. If DMOZ and Google are indeed affiliated, then my sites should be listed in that directory since these are Google Adsense compliant.

I totally agree with you. And that is the point I am getting at. I do not understand why out of my hundreds of sites that are indexed in google, are years old and have page rank, are not listed in this google directory.

Anyway, the answer to that according to the google directory page is you have to be in DMOZ first. So what good is that?

I mean who uses that google directory anyway, and for what purpose. Everyone I know uses the SE.
