Which type of link exchange is better?

Usually while exchanging links, i ask for contextual link. But there are site wide links, footer links, text links, banners, etc.
I request for link on the relevant page or section of the website than site wide links.
Which one is the best ?

I don't think it matters where it's placed, unless it's a particularly popular page it's placed on. I think exchanging links isn't very good for SEO unless you have multiple sites, so someone can post a link to your SITE A, while you link to their site in exchange on SITE B. I think it's only a matter of time before Google starts taking notice of link exchanging and puts a stop to it.

Do link exchange with site having same niche as your site and having good pagerank.I think if whole website has common footer then getting link from footer is best.Benefit of such link exchange is you will get backlink from all web pages of that website.

Anywhere would be... As long as you have the link on the relevant dofollow page. It is important to look at the page where your link will be placed. Avoid the pages that has lots of outgoing links, because the value of your link will be lessen.

A link from the left or right hand side of the website is always better than footer link. But I personally suggest link exchange is not good rather you can do one way link building.

Although one way backlinks would be definitely better, but while exchanging links some points are useful to consider. For example, are the websites related to each other in terms of niches and business fields? How many links are already on the page that is intended to contain your own one? Is the domain of your link partner older than yours? Have you checked the rankings and PR of the pages plus websites?
