Just like blog commenting, link exchanges, social bookmarking, and and the likes, putting a link in your signature in forums is also a way to get backlinks. Often they are not the greatest in terms of search engine love, but they can still be crawled by the search engines. You will get a lot of people following them if you post in a relevant forum that is busy and you are a little descriptive or inventive with the signature you use.

Forum signatures do tend to help your serps a little, but the main thing that you can gain from forum signatures is some good targeted traffic.

That's right as long as you join forums which are related to your site or those which belong to the same niche as yours.

Has to be a dofollow link though. Don't waste your time on forums that have a nofollow with your link.

Best that you check your the forums FAQ's for such concern

Even if nofollow attribute, the SE bots still recognizes your signature as a link. Only that it does not pass on PR if it is a nofollow link...

I suggest you make a query at google search for link:www(dot)yoursite(dot)com to see if the this signatures/backlinks are already showing. Give it a week or two as it depends on how often SE's crawl those forums.

Yes very much .Google does count your forum signature to be a link if it contains the URL of your website.Another factor is that the page in the forum where your post is should be cached.Earlier only the links that were in a page having a PR where updated as backlinks.That happened in October when Google did a update for PR and backlinks.The last time Google did a update for both all links (URLS of websites from forum signatures) were counted.As a matter of fact my backlinks increased by 200.

Google and other search engines cannot differentiate between different types of websites, and they do not have different containers for different websites.

They follow a general rule where informative and good optimized sites rank above other websites.

Having a back link from related/quality forum could have equal effect as that of any directory.

Furthermore, forum signatures is also a source of direct traffic to your site. How you participate and contribute to the forums is very important as well. Always remember that you are carrying your brand

If you post multiple time in the same thread it will only count as 1 backlink. So you might have 1.5k post but 300 hundred must be in the same post.
