Don't search for new techniques. Simply think to follow standard SEO techniques which are followed around the world.
If you are new then Simply start with the on-page SEO and link building.

Keep in touch with forums as a lot of times there is good information (and bad) posted. As rabiafaren says concentrate on tried and tested methods like good on-page optimisation and building links back to your site. As you get more experienced you can work up to more advanced techniques using social media - you'll make mistakes over time but gradually you will build up experience and knowledge then maybe you can specialise in one or two areas.
