Can anyone help me in understanding this site listing behavior?

A week back there is a website I have that was indexed by Google. This site was appearing on the 18th position on the second page while searching for the specific keyword. On tweaking the website a bit more it reached the 13th position without it actually getting indexed yet.

I always thought that the rank changes on indexing by Google, but in this case the website moved up without getting indexed yet. Is this possible? Does anyone know how this is happening? Can anyone explain this erratic behavior?
