Content is the king, but without proper meta tags you will not achieve great ranking.

Content will be the king if you are not posting duplicates, for instance auto-blog with 10 000 posts will not be a good content if only few hundred pages will be indexed by google.

If you have no backlinks for your site, great content will be worthless.
