By portal, do you mean that you are offering services from other websites through your site? Here is a simple tip. Combine every little piece of information that is related to your portal's category and create some webpages for those info that are within the same sub-category of your niche. Then create a blog in your portal that will discuss some topics that are related to your niche.

Well doing postings is very good, but i guess there are new softwares used in SEO.. But for me doing it the manual way is better.! So a good posting and together with some social sites.. worked a lot for me.!

For portal website you need to even opimtize the search results page. I mean if its something like warez website where people do search for some software or movies. Now the link what you get after searching certain things need to optimized.
