How much backlinks?

I was wondering how much backlinks roughly you have when trying to rank high? And what is the quickest way to create backlinks (without buying any softwares)

I think link exchanging, article submission, directory submission, press releases, promoting your website in your signatures in forums all these things can help you a lot in creating more backlinks...

Link exchange seems to be the easiest method nowadays to get back links. But you have to choose carefully as you dont want alot of outgoing links on your website as this would hurt your rankings

Alot? How much as in 'alot'? I have a links page with some links to other websites (for link exchange) I don't want to have too much links in there but what is the limit?

You need to put your link in signatures, put them in directories, bookmarks them, and also populate your website in forums, websites, blog. And tell it to your friends and relatives.

I already do that, but I can't make my link on my signature in all forums, for some reasons (no it's not an adult site) but still so far so good. I'm bookmarking it and advertising it etc... hope I do well.

Maybe the best option is to find out how many backlinks your competitors are using. Check out the Link popularity website, which would give you an idea, but it is the quality (higher page ranking) backlinks that are the strongest.

Commenting on dofollow blogs also get you back links but should be done with high PR pages.
Check your competitor sites backlink quantity to check how you can overcome that site.

The numbers don't count that much - its quality and relevancy as well as proper anchoring that matters in SERP ranking.

Back links can really help you. Keep in mind quality back links are the most desired and will help you get the best results. Garbage links won't help you at all. Work with .org and .edu extensions and relevant websites to yours.

As much as it needs your website too! Over SEOing can affect your PR, so do it as smoothly as it can. I don't mind totally on PR, I just concentrate on my backlinks because PR will just go naturally.
