The same is true for search engine optimization. For many people, the term is a new one, and they have no idea what it is an SEO does. To others, SEO is synonymous with SEM -- search engine marketing. In my opinion, there is a big difference between the two.

I think the difference will come from the way you use the SEO and SMO.
SMO stand for social media optimization meaning your optimizing your own social media network, while SEO is optimizing your own site...

Hello Friends...
According to me
SEO ptimizing our site in this manner that it comes on top in search engines
SEM:I see SEM as a rather broad term. It's everything that can be done to utilize the technology of search engines with the goal of promoting a web site and increasing its traffic, its "stickiness,"
Thanks

Optimizing your social network is called SMO and that stands for Social Media Optimization while optimizing your own site in search engine is called SEO and that stands for Search Engine Optimization.

Social media optimization could be considered as one of the methods of search engine marketing, yet there are few differences too. The main focus of Social media optimization is to drive traffic from sources other than search engines. However, improved search ranking is also a benefit of successful SMO.

SMO is a specific method to optimize your website, which can be considered as one of the methods of SEM. Totally agree with alanwaters.

A set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a "Digg This" button, blogging and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos. Social media optimization is a form of search engine marketing.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
The act of altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines. In the past, has also been used as a term for any type of search engine marketing activity, though now the term search engine marketing is more commonly used as an umbrella term.

SEO is a part of SEM.It is a process of optimizing the content of your website for high listings.
SEM includes SEO and other areas to improve a sites visibility in search engine results pages, like paid listings and paid inclusions.SEM is more expensive and quite possibly more targeted.

SEO : Search Engine Optimization
SMO : Social Media Optimization
SEO and SMO usually go hand in hand. If you are planning to have more quality traffic to your website do not rely only on one source of traffic.

You get traffic from social media sites in SMO and you get traffic from SE in SEM.
And the former one is less targeted than the latter one.
