Any website created by a webmaster or company for the purpose of rendering any for of service to the public, be it a free or paid service, needs visitors in other to succeed.
So, why would SEO not be necessary for any such site?

Yes SEO is necessary for a web site as it boosts your web site with traffic and also good PR which makes your web site rank in a good position of SERPS.

The answer is an easy one. You need search engine optimization to be number one, or maybe at least make your site income generating.

With search engine optimization you can get the benefit of generating a high traffic volume. Let’s just say you get only a turn out of successful sales with 10 to 20 percent of your traffic. If you get a hundred hits or more a day, you get a good turn out of sales already. If you get only twenty to ten hits a day, you only get one or two if not any at all.

If u do the site for fun, I don't think u need it, just do it at your ease!

But if not, then do SEO and promote your site in the most effectiv way!

Without optimized title tags, meta data, URLs and page copy, you are not going to be found in the search results.

SEO is obviously necessary for any website to get a maximum exposure via search engines. You can also market your website via social networking or advertising but i think doing SEO will help you to get benefit for long term without doing anything. There are no such websites which are on top without doing SEO. They must have done SEO to get such a huge readers.

Depending on your own needs.
If you are just writing personal blogs for fun and don't like all the tiredsome work, don't bother.
But if you are running an online business or just want to improve PR to make extra money via posting ads for companies, of course you need to do SEO.

If you say to reach people or you want user to come to your site, then definitely SEO is necessary.

Depends on the purpose of your website. If you want to monetize from it then yes. If not then I don't think it is important.
