Default Will this lose me traffic?

Hi,

I'm working on optimizing a website which used to have very long title tags i.e. 12 words long. Now I’ve reduced it to 7.

It used to be something like this:

Clients website name Ltd - Personal injury solicitors clinical negligence human rights lawyers

And now reads:

Personal injury lawyers - Clients website name solicitors

It looks better but do you think this will lose me a lot of traffic?

Sorry can't disclose actual site.

Have you done your keyword research?
How many people are searching for this keyword per day?

It is very important when you are doing seo for your website.
If you have selected a keyword which no one is searching for. Your website won't be listed.

Sometimes less is more. Just as long as your keywords are prominent in your title AND text and they are KW that people actually look for, the shorter title is probably the way to go. My name is Brock and my site name is very short.

Title's are important, but content is even more important. Make sure you have keywords all over the text on the page but obviously it can't look spammy. Also, make sure the keywords are bolded, italicized, or in a larger font as long as it doesn't look tacky or spammy. Use <h> tags where appropriate.

cherie27 has told a very important point. You should always do a keyword research before optimizing site. First look for the keywords which are being searched a lot. Also, you should do a research on competitors sites that what keywords they have used?
For keywords research there are many tools but the better ones are google adwords, overture & wordtracker.

Title is the face of any website and if you play with your face then you know what will be the output so better keep title short, keyword rich without domain name and informative

It depends on how well you were showing up and bringing in traffic for the keywords in the original title tag. If say you were showing up for "human rights lawyer" then by removing those words from the title you may see a change for that particular phrase. In that case use this phrase on another appropriate page with content about "human rights lawyer" if this phrase is one of your important keyword phrases. The most important thing to do is keyword research and decide which phrases should be used on specific pages as people have mentioned already. In the past if a client has good results for phrases that are already in place I work around the phrase already in place and add more to the title tag if those original keywords still accurately reflect what the content of the page is about.

the best thing to do it go to google keyword tool, and then search for the appropriate keyword for your website, look for a keyword with lots of recorded searches, also pick another keyword with less competitors, by the way your old keyword was too long, I go with the new one..

A good title tag should be short. It should not exceed 5 keywords and pertinent to the content inside the page.

Yeah sure if your are going to change your tittle text then its gonna make impact on your previous Serp ranking ... Thats why people always say first make your plan that on which keywords you want to be on top of search engines . and after that optimize your site ...

Most importantly, you want to make use of your keywords. Next in line would be "catchy." Work those 2 in, and then make it as brief as possible without sacrificing the first 2 points. Brief is better, but sometimes you've just got more to say.
