They are very useful for backlinks, and to some extent traffic. Good traffic comes from the top bookmarking sites like Digg, Folkd, and Reddit. Backlinks are very good when you submit to 100+ backlinks.

I agree with the general thought here that social bookmarking helps with traffic and with backlinks too. My name is Brock and I use one way links whenever possible to get long lasting backlinks too. I have a directory site.

Social Bookmarkings and submitting to social news sites both help in regards of backlinks and traffic. If those social sites are do-follow, it would be an added advantage. Also they are a good way to get indexed in Google pretty fast along with forum signatures and article submissions.
