Default how to use "trackbacks"

How do you use these "trackbacks". I have noticed on a couple forums that in the advanced section, trackbacks are available.

When I read up on it, the articles were for blogging and said that whenever you post comments, you should trackback as well if available.

How does this help?
What exactly does it achieve?
Is it only for blogging or is it for regular html sites too.

thx for the help?

I found this definition for you, perhaps it can make your ideas clearer:-
"A Trackback is one of three types of Linkbacks, methods for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to, or referring to their articles. Some weblog software programs, such as Movable Type and Community Server, support automatic pingbacks where all the links in a published article can be pinged when the article is published. The term is used colloquially for any kind of Linkback."

Thank you very the definition Tcm. I've been wondering about this myself for some time now. I'm curious though, what are some benefits of doing this? I'm always looking for any edge, it would be nice to know if there's some way to use trackbacks for my benefit.
