In a nutshell it is about optimising and marketing which is against the search engine provider or online retailer terms of service.

It can be considered anything that goes against the search engine terms which, in Googles case, also includes buying links.

I personally know a guy who is very good at Black Hat. He said that there's a very fine line between black hat and white hat. When Google don't like it, it is consider black hat. Black Hat techniques include:

1. Blog farm
2. Link Farm
3. Unlimited Doorway pages
4. Keyword stuffing
5. Blog Comment Spamming
etc.

Black hat is a term used to describe techniques people think the search engines 'frown upon'. There's no definitive list, and what they do and do not 'like' changes all the time, so it's fairly pointless. Basically, NONE of them like you trying to 'game' their results. It's that simple. Even something 'white hat', if done to 'game' an engine, could get you a penalty.

It down to what looks 'natural'. If your article if 500 words, and 200 of hem are 'wedding', it doesn't look 'natural'. And will get flagged.

techniques that are used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner. Like:

* breaks search engine rules and regulations
* creates a poor user experience directly because of the black hat SEO techniques utilized on the Web site
* unethically presents content in a different visual or non-visual way to search engine spiders and search engine users.

Question Why is Black hat SEO so popular

Black hat SEO gives immediate results but it is considered unethical. Then, why are these techniques so popular?

the poster above using the word 'unethical' obviously doesn't understand what it means.

You can't be 'unethical' by breaching the arbitrary operational preferences of a commercial entity.

Sure, Google etc would like you to THINK it's 'unethical', but it isn't. It just annoys them because it makes their job harder.

What IS unethical is spidering, copying and reproducing other people's entire websites without permission, which is what your typical search engines do.

Normally, such behavior would be called 'stealing'. Which IS unethical.

it may give fast results, but most people also seem to believe those results don't last long.

as I said above, legally you can't 'violate their TOS' because you haven't agreed to them in the first place. they come along, spider your site, steal your content, and then complain in some way.

that's exactly like someone visiting your cafe, stealing a sandwich, then complaining that there's too much salt in it

poor knowledge and research sometimes leads to blackhats techniques without them knowing that they were doing wrong, so its better to participate in communities like this one to learn more on do's and don'ts

how do you define 'unethical'? Or are you just trying to get your post count up?
