Think forums have their place in SEO. Though are not the only useful tool.
Also nothing wrong with posting link - long as it's not against forum rules!

Forum posting is one of the main important thing for promoting the site.
It helps in increasing traffic and building back links. Signature is the most important one. Daily posting in forums is more helpful for the site for increasing traffic.

Well you will need it. And it has a strong possibility of having and collecting good backlinks for your sites. Specially if forum is allow to have signatures.
