Make sure you have links coming in to as many pages as possible. What does it tell a search engine when other web sites are linking to different pages on your site? That you obviously have lots of worthwhile content. What does it tell a search engine that all your links are coming in to the home page? That you have a shallow site of little value, or that your links were generated by automation rather than by the value of your site.

Sorry but I can't agree with that over all statement. I do agree that it is desirable to have links to internal pages, it doesn't send the signals to the SE's that you are suggesting. I have something like 4500 links to my home page but my internal pages only have a few each, but because the internal navigation is good the link juice is spread round the site. I know this because all my internal pages have good PR.
Also I don't see how a SE can deduce that links were produced by automation if they point only to the home page. An SE doesn't know how a link is produced, only where it comes from and where it leads to.

I have found that article marketing is effective in link building. It's best to use a good directory like E-zine. Articles tend to get picked up relatively frequently from E-zine directories. Whether or not the sites that pick up your articles includes your resource box with links is a different story.
