Spiders or crawling programs are actually snippets of applications and software codes which are surfing and searching the net constantly, paying visits to pages which are being added to the websites, blogs, forums and other ranges of projects on the internet. For example, Googlebot is accessing contents present on millions of websites and when a page is indexed it has already got accessed by the Google spider or crawler.

It is important to make sure the structures of websites are in a way to get accessed by spiders or crawlers of search engines in an easy way, leading to better access and faster indexing of the pages and contents. It is generally believed that through using static web pages structures, the spiders will be having better access to various parts of websites, indexing more records of them and scanning contents uploaded.

If you asking what is spider then it is animal but if you are asking what is search engine spider then it is crawling program which crawl the whole web to get and index all the website present on internet.
