Search engine where we use search engine as marketing way and directory is where we submit our website to get listed in the site.

From some aspects they could be similar to each other and still considered to be very different in nature and how they operate. Both directories and search engines have options to index URLs or the same addresses of domains which are submitted to them. Some directories are so big that they contain thousands of links and details of the websites and some of them may even be equipped with their very own crawling systems.

Search engines too are doing these things constantly but crawlers which belong to search engines are very active compared with directories. Also, search engines contain millions or even billions of pages addresses which could be far more than the number of sites directories might cover and contain. The biggest difference is in terms of traffic because search engines like Google are accessed by millions of users on a daily basis.

Search engine have large amount of data and we can find anything which we want but directories have less data only submitted in this.

Search engine is website which help in finding different information. A search engine design to finding this information through whole world wide web and ftp servers.

Whereas directory is similarly a website which have different information related to different aspect of life. Just like directory which we have in life. Directory usually have phone numbers and address in natural world but in web world the directory have web address and url name with information related to this url....

Search Engine - A program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found. Although search engine is really a general class of programs, the term is often used to specifically describe systems like Google.

Directory - An organizational unit, or container, used to organize folders and files into a hierarchical structure. Directories contain bookkeeping information about files that are, figuratively speaking, beneath them in the hierarchy. You can think of a directory as a file cabinet that contains folders that contain files.

Web directory-we submit our websites in the web directory to rank high in search engines

Unlike search engines which use both spiders and humans for gathering knowledge, web directory are edited by humans.

Search engine gives you results regarding your query by matching with pages from all over the world and a directory is just a database of sites added to it under relevant categories and Directory is specific to its categories only like business directory, travel directory etc.

Search Engine is the way where from we can find any site that we want to find out by just type some keyword related to our site then we can get list of those keyword that related to our keyword while directories is like a small Search Engine..
