According to me as far as I know Seo is part of Sem, however Sem focus other on marketing while Seo spotlight on on page and off page, but if I were you I would select Seo if you really wanted to get traffic then you should focus more on link building.

For me both SEO and SMO are best. with SEO we can get higher ranking for our keyword in search engines and with SMO we can get huge traffic for our site.

I agree but SEO is necessary in internet marketing. And difference is SEO is totally free and organic. but SEM is also important part for Internet marketing.

You are very right about SEO, it is a slow process but very effective as many of people only click on organic listing only and few of them click on paid ones. SEM is not slow as you apply for ads, it will appear on search engine results but people click on these ads if they dont get result which they want...

If your site is new to search engines and you want to rank your site in a quicker period of time, then you can go on with SEM. SEM is nothing but ranking the site in sponsored section. This can be easily achieved if you provide the right bit by having the google adwords account.

As you stated SEO is a slow process , but helps in ranking the site life long. This will take upto 3 months depending upon how you work on the site with correct on page and off page techniques.
