Hi,
Backlinks when you got a link from other site and google counts its called backlink. its important because site ranking is depend on the backlinks.

Any other website which point to your website or we can say that put link of your website at that time you will get back link from that particular website. Quality back links are significant to get high rankings on search engine result page which is also useful to increase your website traffic.
