I have a friend who used for a new website one type of black hat method in the past (about three years ago) and after one year (after he reached 10k uniques/day) he turned on white hat techniques.
Now his website is very high on traffic (more than 100k uniques/day) and he earns a lot from it.
The problem is either google or other search engines haven't noticed nothing on his first year when he used that black method.
So finally, it's wise not to do it because you risk more thank you can afford.
Some are lucky others not, that's life.
