Newbie to programming
Hi, what's the best way to design your site? I've tried buying several books already, it still hasn't sinked in. Anyone care to share how they got started? Thanx

I agree with kingjacob,
Purchasing books is a waste of money as all of the information can be found freely on the web and infact much more of it.
I learn't all of my stuff on how to design a site from using the web. I have never had to purchase anything apart from web hosting and a domain to get the site up and running.
It is always best to start of with the basics and don't go head first into anything. Start with the basics and once you have got the hand of that then go a little more advanced into it. I learn't HTML first followed by a little CSS and then followed by PHP, SQL and some other languages.

There are many sites that fulled with lot's of information web designing. You can search it on google. Follow simple steps to design your site:
1.Decide purpose of site
2.Decide language you using for creating website
3.Try on default available themes for content management systems. Change the graphics and color you want
4.For good navigation look at your site as an outsider and check whether site has good navigation or not.

Unless and until you are planning to create a dynamic site you need not worry too much about learning any programming language. Basic knowledge of CSS and HTML should be enough if you are using a web designing software like front page or macromedia.

I going to start using Dreamweaver. I hope that is the best way to go. As soon as my order comes in, I'm going start learning.

I"ve also tried learning as I go several times(after I bought the books), maybe I just lack the patience or just wanna skip some steps, but I find programming the most frustrating thing I've ever tried.

i would recommend you to use content management systems. it is very easy to maintaine and you dont need programming skills (at all).
if you really need programming ..
dreamweaver is the best choice, i m using it for years.

kingjacob is right on the spot.
Another great way is to tinker with the code of existing sites. You'll get to know exactly how each thing works. That helps.

Re:how to start learning php
Above all mentioned you should have good easy in use php editor. Personally I use codelobster php edition (codelobster.com). It's good to start with and free.

How I got started
Hi
I did a short 6 month course in Internet Design. Looking back the course was very basic, and I didn't learn too much but it did give me a basic insight into Javascript & HTML.
Unlike some of the other posts I do believe in buying two books PHP in 24 hour and Javascript in 24 hours. They were great, I tried the examples, read the books from cover to cover, made plenty of mistakes, but grew from these and now I have developed my E-commerce software. Though the books don't cover everything, everything else came from the Internet, the most useful website being the PHP website
Happy coding anyway
Paul
