Best website design/coding resource or tutorials?

If you were a complete beginner to web design and coding, what site would you consider to be the best resource or tutorial for learning from scratch? I'm not talking about a forum or anything like that. I mean a site that has step by step tutorials for a newbie to learn. I noticed a lot of sites that charge for this but I imagine there must be a ton of free sites out there that can provide this service. It would be even more helpful if it had video tutorials.

When I first started learning all this web designing and coding stuff I first used htmlgoodies. I didn't know much about the web then, so I guess I really only used that because it came up in the search results first or near the top of the results or something. I can't even remember which search engine I was using. It may have been google or it may have been a different one as I don't think Google was quite so big then, which was about 6 - 7 years ago.

I don't know if htmlgoodies.com is the best, but it definately helped me with learning the basics for html.

I think it's best to learn and css before learning to code php, asp, etc. If you learn html and css first then php and asp may be easier to learn. Well that is how I did it anyway. I would say that I am quite fluent in html and php now and some other langauges I know quite a bit of.

I must admit that if you don't know much or any html and php and other programming languages, then it is a good idea to learn it if you want to earn your main income from websites. It is not something that is required for you to know to be successful in websites, but it is definately a great advantage to you to know it as I have found out many of times, daily.

I just took a look at that site and it is pretty helpful. For the most part I have relied on templates and instant site builders for most of my projects, but I would love to learn how to make my pages myself. I think my next step is to start a small project using the info on that site and seeing how it goes. Thanks for that! Does anyone know any others?

I will always recommend to anyone wanting to learn PHP to sit down with Kevin Yank's book: How to Build a Database Driven Website. It starts out with a somewhat practical example. It will introduce you to MySQL so you can understand queries and then it will take you on to very small PHP scripts. The only problem I have had with the book is that the code is not very organized, sometimes going to the next line (perhaps due to width of the physical pages) for no apparent reason.

I wanted to have a good understanding of HTML when I started, even though it's not used as much as other coding these days. htmlcodetutorial.com did that for me. I'd say a trip to your library would find you a book or two on whatever you need.

Damn, there is some really good resources that you all have turned me on to in this thread. I really like Smashing Magazine, and the htmlcodetutorial.com site is also very helpful. It's amazing how many free resources are readily available like that. Thanks again all!

I totally agree with you that W3schools is the best online web tutorials.The tutorials are arranged for both beginners and experience users.
Moreover the site allows you to code online and see the results online.

Hi I would recommend the book PHP in 24 hours. Try some of examples, and create your own simple projects, then go for it...
