XML stands for EXtensible Markup Language. XML was designed to carry data, not to display data. XML is a W3C Recommendation. It is a standard, simple, self-describing way of encoding both text and data so that content can be processed with relatively little human intervention and exchanged across diverse hardware, operating systems, and applications.

XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language. It is a language to define other languages, it is in fact a meta-language. XML is not a language but a meta-language. XML is a set of rules, that a language must respect in order to be XML conformant. Therefore you can define your own mark-up language, and make it to evolve at your envy.

XML is "Extensible Markup Language". XML is subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) defined in ISO standard 8879:1986 that is designed to make it easy to interchange structured documents over the Internet. XML files always clearly mark where the start and end of each of the logical parts of an interchanged document occurs. XML restricts the use of SGML constructs to ensure that fall back options are available when access to certain components of the document is not currently possible over the Internet.

eXtensible Markup Language: some more precision, in reverse order:
Language

XML is a language to define other languages: it is in fact a meta-language.
Mark-up

This informs us that the structuring elements of that language will be tags, like used in HTML: a tag name enclosed in brackets: <ATag>.
eXtensible

XML is not a language (which is by definition fixed) but a meta-language. XML is a set of rules, that a language must respect in order to be XML conformant. Therefore you can define your own mark-up language, and make it to evolve at your envy.

ONIX is a standard format or "language" that publishers need to use when distributing electronic information about books to wholesale, e-tail and retail booksellers, other publishers, and any other supply chain partner involved in the production, review or sale of books, incorporating the core content which has been specified in national initiatives such as BIC Basic and ONIX Version 2.1. While backwards compatibility is guaranteed to ONIX 2.0, newer (normalized) structure will be encouraged with old poorly structured methods "deprecated".
