Both are good in there way. Php is cheap in hosting and open source.
.net is good in security purpose.

I also think that PHP is better. But I know a lot of people who prefer Java development and even Net development comes second i guess.

Defiantly I go with PHP, We have used PHP for more than thousand of website and it work well. I think PHP is most used programming Language currently.
