Deciding to go with PayPal or with a regular merchant account should be based on the following factors.
1. Do you have poor or no credit? If yes go with PayPal if no go with a regular merchant account.
2. Is customer service important to you? If yes, go with a merchant account provider, if no, go with PayPal.
3. Do you want money from your transactions to go directly into your bank account, or do you want it in your bank account within 3 days or earlier. If yes, go with a merchant account. Paypal can take up to 5 days or more to deposit money into your account and charge you a fee to transfer funds into your bank account. Why so long? PayPal holds that money for that many days because it makes interest of your money for a few days. Sounds like pennies but if you consider how many people use PayPal and how much money passes through their hands on a daily basis its millions!
4. Are transaction rates important to you? If so go with a merchant account. PayPal does not have competitive rates. If you shop around with various other merchant account providers you will find that in the long run you save money with a merchant account.
5. Beware that some customers just don't like paypal and will not buy from sites that only offer PayPal.
That's my advice. I will be frank, I do work for a merchant account company, and I want the forum to know that. That said, PayPal works for some people, and many people love it, and many people hate it. Its also important to know that you can have PayPal and a merchant account running on your site. My advice is to do some research and base your decision on the factors important to your business. If you decide to look into a merchant account look at several different providers and be careful of the one that have contracts or the ones with cancellation fees. Most merchant account companies (but not mine) have these and entice clients with super low rates that they suddenly jack up a couple months later because you're now under contract and it will cost hundreds of dollars to cancel the contract (think cell phone companies). Also check out any company you are looking at with the BBB.
I hope this has been helpful.
