A virtual credit card is replacement for your actual credit card number that can be used to make purchases on line. Some credit card providers call them "single-use card numbers." The number assigned is associated with your actual credit card number, but the only people aware of this are you and your credit card company. The virtual card acts as a protective layer between you, your purchase and your credit card information.

Several banks and credit card companies offer this service. Currently, DiscoverCard, Citi Bank and MBNA credit card companies each have a
virtual credit card program. American Express testing one, and while consumers were pleased with it, the program was discontinued due to a lack of interest overall among customers.

i used viritual credit card but not for online payment.i used them for verifying my paypal accounts.i think its safe way with out using actual credit card.

The biggest advantage of using a Virtual Credit Card for online transactions is preventing the Identity Theft which is very common these days.

VCC also have very short expiry dates and also the highest limit of spending is pre-decided on them, which makes them even more secure to use online.

The benefit of using a virtual credit card is that the temporary account number you generate and use for a one time or one vendor purchase is useless to hackers. If a hacker obtains the account number it will not be useful to him as it cannot be used again.

I have a friend who have both icici and hdfc bank account and i just told him about this. He created account with them that netsafe account and he verified his paypal too so i think this works perfectly.
