Alternative to Photoshop?
Does anyone know of an alternative to using Imageready/Photoshop for cropping images? At work I have the time to work on websites, but the problem is that sometimes I need to slice a design. I do not have access to photoshop, but if there was free software out there available that I could toy with that would be great. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ive heard Gimp is a pretty good alternative for photoshop and its a free distribution so thats good GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program , As for an Imageready alternative I dont know of any free software that even comes close.

PAINT.NET is a good one which supports a lot of photoshop like features.

I am very happy with Picasa. I can do several basic photo editing techniques with it. It's free and easy to use - and it's distributed by google.
I've also heard that Photoshop Elements is good, but it's not free.

Aside from those listed above, you can also use the Paint application of Windows. For cropping it can perform the task on hand. But for producing quality images, you have to use the more advance edit editors.

I've heard mixed reports about GIMP. The fact that it's free is obviously very good, but there two different things you have to download for it isn't there? Can be hard to get to grips with too.

None good enough on Windows, gimp is a good alternative. Picasa is excellent but its pretty basic, not many advanced features

GIMP is apparently really good. I use photoshop myself thought. But steer clear of MS Paint! It's terrible and as far as I'm concerned, you can't get any good results with it. (DON'T go linking to the Mona Lisa vid lol)

GIMP is the best alternative to PhotoShop. This is a great open source software. It also has an add-on by which you can make GIMP look like Photoshop a little bit.

I'd say as far as freebies go, Paint.NET and the GIMP are the best out there. I haven't tried the latest version of the GIMP, but the one I tried several years ago was full of glitches...I couldn't get it to work for more than 10 minutes without freezing. I thought Paint.NET was pretty good. It's fairly fast and has a good amount of effects. Both Paint.NET and the GIMP support layers. Nothing can compare to what Photoshop can do, but I'd say give these two a try if you want to work with a freebie prog, and like jmul7 said, "steer clear of MS Paint!".

GIMP is the best alternative to photoshop and imageready. Its free also. ( Open Source ) The GNU Image Manipulation Program. Many designing firms have already switched over to these type of open source software

Well, I have gotten a chance to compare the GIMP and Paint.NET and...the GIMP is much more flexible and professional than Paint.NET. It has more filters and is more powerful. So in my opinion, go with the latest version of the GIMP.
