www or no www, which is better and why?

Why I can't see www on so many sites? What are the specific reasons that Google don't allow www??

I think that there is no difference between with www or without www. Many hosting packages automatically display the address as www.
When you are building back links it is a little different situation.
Google count links with www and without www particularly. Google sees them as two different pages.

You can add you site in Google webmaster tool and tell google which type you would like it to prefer.

Registering as a www version is a good practice. But sometimes due to some non-www version backlinks, the non-www version will also ge indexed in SE. So in that case use 301 re-direction in non-www and re-direct it to www version.
