Default Google penalizes sites for having duplicate content?

Hi folks,

There is a popular myth about duplicate content, and that is that Google penalizes sites for having duplicate content.

Greg Grothaus of the Search Quality Team of Google cleard that Google itself is not penalizing you for it.

Google recognizes that most duplicate content is not created to be deceptive. There are of course exceptions, which are considered spam. They're being penalized for being spam but not for having duplicate content.

There are some issues that can arise that may negatively affect your rankings.

1) Your link popularity will be diluted. Backlinks pointing to several different URL versions of the same content, will make it harder to accumulate link juice for one URL.

2) User-unfriendly URLs in search results may offset branding efforts and decrease usability as well.

3) With multiple versions of the same thing, Google will spend more time crawling the same content, meaning it will have less time to go deeper into your site, and you run the risk of having content not get indexed.

I guess it's always proper and safe to not use duplicate content for articles or for website. This is to avoid plagiarism and to get your pages crawled and indexed (like mentioned above). What you can do is to play around with words in articles if you have to submit them to different databases.

Hi,

It is true, as Google always give preference to good content though it should be relevant and should go with the concept of the website.

If Google finds duplicacy in the content and if it is copied than, there is a chance to get penalized by Google.

Thanks!!

As far as I know Google will not penalized your site by just copying others content but it will affect you as an SEO so try to create a unique content for your site.

There is no such thing as a duplicate content "penalty".

There is a duplicate content filter that reduces the possibility of the same content being duplicated in the SERP.

Hi,

This really affects the SEO as, if suppose one site is ranking for a original content and there is a site which coppied some content from it and ranking on a good position from it then there will be a problem for a site which is having original content.

So, it is better to avoid duplicate content and should work properly to make content more better.

Thanks!!

Hi,

I agree with you as, google never penalizes the site very quick but the ranking gets very low and some time it doesnot appears on the pages too.

Thanks!

Yeah, google will look at the most relevant source and use that.So 4 pages of duplicate makes 3 of them a waste. If there is duplicate across domains ,it lowers the value of content since google is attemping to give the most relative and unique finding to a search.

in my experience, creating duplicate contents for backlinks is still effective...

I completely disagree with such a statement. Google will never penalize for your site for having duplicate content. There are several factors responsible for it.

There's no such thing as a "duplicate content penalty." There are some penalties that are related to the idea of having the same content as another site—for example, if you're scraping content from other sites and republishing it, or if you republish content without adding any additional value.

You are right! I have seen some sites with almost the same contents (they made a website and later then they made one more copy with few adjustments only and use an another domain name!). But the site still in high ranking!

Google does not penalize sites quickly but your sites ranking does get very low and sometimes it’s even hard to find your page on the search results too.

There has never been a penalty for having a duplicate content. What a duplicate content would suffer from is not getting indexed in search engines, and it might also be bad for the original content because search engines have no way of telling which one is original and which one is not. So, there is a chance of getting the duplicate content indexed and the original content filtered, and that would be cheating because you are getting the credit that the original content is supposed to have. Or you might be penalized if the original owner of the content discovers it and then report it to the search engines.

Google does not penalized such sites but does not give good rank.
