To get ranked top 20 should not be your goal. #1 rank should be the priority, it is widely stated that 30% of search traffic will click on the first site in the listing. Meaning that if there are 10,000 searches per month for a certain keyword or phrase, the 1st site on the list will get about 3,000 visitors to their site from google. To rank high in google search, you will need to do quite a bit of work, more than I'm willing to write about in a single post. I've been researching this topic for quite some time now and am still learning new things every day. To give you some general help, sort of a starting point for the type of info you'll need to be successful, you'll need to know about:

• Keyword Research
• Optimizing your site for search engines
• Building Backlinks
• Practices to avoid (ie duplicate content)

For checking pagerank, I use the Google Toolbar plugin for the Firefox Browser. It automatically diplays the PR of each site I visit up at the top of my browser.

To check your current position, jsut type in a keyword or phrase you would like to be or think you might be ranked for and look for your site.
