There 2 types I know of: .xml which can be 'crawled' by Google's spiders; and .html which can be used for visitors to search for their desired links.

Two types of sitemap-
1.xml sitemap- It tell the search engine which pages you want to index, it help the search engine.
2.Html sitemap- It is generally for end user

There are two types of sitemaps HTML and XML.
HTML is used for the user point of view and XML is used by the crawler and then website is crawled by spider.

Well, I preferred to use xml sitemap which is helpful in SEO too..

There are two types of sitemaps for a website.
1. XML sitemap
2. html sitemap

XML sitemap is useful to submit in google webmaster so that google bot can easily carwals our webpages.
HTML sitemap is a webpage on our website which is useful to user to navigate on website.
