Yes.,Shorten URL's are used especially Social media websites to share web pages and interesting links. All are spending hours and hours in front of Twitter,Facebook, etc, so URL Shortener services are increasing day by day. Most of people have this question that whether these short URLs are SEO friendly or not.
Usually shorten URLs will redirect to destination URLs. We need to find out whether these redirections are permanent (301) or temporary (302). We have few free tools on the web to check it. Yes, URL Shorten Services are using permanent 301 redirection which is search engine friendly. Please have a look at the following screenshot and video for better understanding.

The only real way to share information on twitter and facebook ect. is to use URL shortners, as you cant fit much information on a twitter post otherwise, and facebook doesnt always like full website links.

yeah, i agree too that url shortners are very useful esp in twitter where there is limit on no. of characters. I almost doubled traffic to my site through effective use of link bait with url shortners.

you better use your own site urls even if they are long. but if you want to post them of facebook or twitter you can use the short urls ..

In fact Google itself provides a tool for URL shortening.

Well they're not as friendly as I would like!

For example, if your posting on twitter you get a better clickthrough rate if you DON'T use url shorteners.

I like shorter URLS but the downside to them is many people are wary of shortened URLs. Since the URL is compacted, they're not sure if the link is legit or not if they hover on them. This happens to me too and there have been times that I did not click on a link simply because I'm not sure where it was going to take me. You can never be too sure in this spammy virtual world.
